CLE Compliance
What is required for CLE Compliance?
Minnesota-licensed lawyers on active status must report at least 45 continuing legal education (CLE) credit hours every three years.
Included in the 45 credit hours must be a minimum of 3 ethics or professional responsibility credit hours, a minimum of 2 elimination of bias credit hours, and a minimum of 1 mental health/substance use credit hour. Approved on-demand courses viewed and reported prior to Jan. 1, 2024, are subject to a 30-credit limit per 3-year reporting period. If the approved on-demand course was viewed and reported after January 1, 2024, and is to satisfy reporting requirements for reporting years 2024 and later, there is no credit cap.
What’s a CLE category?
All Minnesota licensed lawyers are assigned to one of three reporting categories for CLE purposes. Log into OASIS or search for your name in MARS to find your CLE category.
Lawyer Reporting Categories
- Category 1: July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2027; July 1, 2027 to June 30, 2030
- Category 2: July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025; July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2028
- Category 3: July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026; July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2029
Next Filing Deadline:
Category 3 lawyers report by August 31, 2026.
Report CLE:
There are two ways to report CLE attendance at approved courses :
1. Report attendance online using OASIS, or
2. Report attendance on a paper Affidavit of CLE Compliance form and mail it to the CLE office. There’s a $10 paper affidavit fee if you do not report in OASIS.
Reporting Deadline:
August 31 following the end of your reporting period.
June 30 to August 31 Period: The Rules do not require that you report your compliance by June 30 (the last day of the reporting period). The Rules do require that you report your compliance by August 31.
If you have not met your CLE requirements by June 30, you may attend courses and complete CLE requirements between July 1 and August 31 without requesting a formal extension from the Board. But you must report your CLE compliance by August 31.
See Rule 9 for additional information about the filing deadline.
When is a Late Fee Due? A $75 late fee is charged if you report your CLE after August 31 of your reporting year, even if you have asked for and received an extension.
See Rule 9(D) for additional information about the late filing fee.
Requests for Extension:
If you will not be able to complete or report your CLE credits by the end of your reporting period, you may request an extension.
July 1 to August 31: No formal extension request is required. You must report the courses by the August 31 reporting deadline to avoid a late fee.
September 1 to October 31: You must submit an extension request with the date of your requested extension and the reason you are submitting an extension request. You may submit this request through OASIS. These extensions are automatically granted. You will be required to submit the $75 late fee even if the extension is granted.
After November 1: You will need to provide a compelling reason for requesting an extension beyond Oct. 31 of your reporting year. You must include a detailed plan, the number of credits you have taken to date, and a time frame that you anticipate you will be able to fully complete your credits. Reasonable requests will typically be granted. You will be required to submit the $75 late fee even in the extension is granted.
Extensions will not change your reporting deadline for future periods. If you are requesting an extension after a Notice of Noncompliance is issued, you will be required to pay the $200 noncompliance fee even if the request is granted.
How to request an extension?*
1. Online: Log into your OASIS account. Click the “CLE” drop down menu, select “CLE Forms and Requests”, then click on “Request Credit Deadline Extension.”
2. In writing: Send your request in writing to the Board office. Make sure to include a detailed plan if you are requesting an extension past November 1.
